We hear it all the time: “Paleo is so restrictive!” Umm, not really!
It all comes down to perspective. If you think you can’t eat bacon & eggs, or ribeye steak, or seafood because of the cholesterol and saturated fat – now, that’s what WE call restrictive.
What should you eat on a Paleo Diet?
Paleo is about “JERF”-ing. Just-Eat-Real-Food-ing. There are a wide variety of nutrient dense foods which provide the micronutrients (vitamins & minerals) you need for good health. Junk food just doesn’t deliver.
With Paleo, you get to choose from a wide variety of non-processed meats and seafood. There are dozens & dozens of vegetables, how bad can that be? Plus there are a wide choice of fruits, nuts & seeds, and healthy oils. These foods enhance your health instead of destroying it slowly.

Robb Wolf has a Food Matrix which lists twenty seven proteins, twenty four vegetables, five fats, and twenty five herbs & spices to help you plan and prepare Paleo meals.
The Matrix is by no means exhaustive, so there are many, many more possibilities out there. Then he takes one item from each list to make a meal and calculates that you get “27x24x5x25= 81,000 DIFFERENT meals. Divide that by 365 (1 different meal per day) and you will not see the same meal for 221 YEARS.” Well, I usually eat 3 meals per day, so that’s about 74 years.
Either way, how is that restrictive?
Paleo = freedom (from feeling like crap)
When it comes to grain-based foods – bread, pasta, cereals – Paleo can be a challenge at first, until you avoid them long enough to realize how much better you feel without them. Since eating Paleo, we and many others have noticed that our aches & pains are gone. Feeling bloated is gone. We have more energy and we’re not sick all the time.
Once you realize how great eating good food makes you feel, you’ll realize how much you are in control of your own health.
This is freedom, not restriction.
